Short Story - Literary Terms

The short story is a brief piece of narrative shorter than a short novel. It is a short prose fiction of about six to ten thousand words that can be read in one sitting, usually about a single character and a single theme aiming at a single effect. While some modern stories of this type have non conventional plot, the structure of most stories is based on five elements:

1. The situation, providing the setting, introducing the main characters and plunging directly into action. 2. The generating circumstance, the event that causes the rising action and starts the train of events. 3. The rising action, all the incidents that follow the generating circumstances and precede the climatic scene. 4. The climax— the scene of the highest interest. 5. The denouement, the resolution of the complication. Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party, Anita Desalts Twilight Games are famous short stories.
