Gias Uddin Azam Shah was a great ruler (শাসক) of Bengal. He was very kind and just. He was fond of hunting. One day he went a hunting at a nearby jungle. He aimed (লক্ষ্য) at a fawn (ফন-হরিণশিশু) but his arrow did not hit the target and it pierced (বিদ্ধ করল) a boy who was standing at the jungle. The boy instantly died. Unfortunately, the boy was the only son of a widow (বিধবা). The widow shocked very much. She went to the Quazi and prayed for justice. The Quazi was a strict judge of that time.
He summoned (নিমন্ত্রিত/ডেকে পাঠান)) the ruler to appear (উপস্থিত হওয়া/হাজির হওয়া) before him. The Quazi was determined to ensure justice. However, Gias Uddin Azam Shah appeared before the court of the Quazi and admitted his guilt (দোষ). The Quazi ordered him to pay full compensation (ক্ষতিপূরণ) to the widow. Gias Uddin paid the fine according to the verdict (বিচারের রায়). Then ruler showed his sword (তরবারি) to the Quazi and said, "If you failed to carry out your duties as a judge out of fear of me, I would have punished you with this sword." Then the Quazi showed his cane (বেত) to the ruler and said, "If you disobeyed (অমান্য করা) my verdict. I would punish you with this cane." The ruler was very happy to hear such an answer from the Quazi. Then the two great men became ever friends.

গিয়াস উদ্দিন আজম শাহ ছিলেন বাংলার একজন মহান শাসক। তিনি খুব দয়ালু এবং ন্যায়পরায়ণ ছিলেন। তিনি শিকারের শৌখিন ছিলেন। একদিন সে কাছের এক জঙ্গলে শিকারে গিয়েছিল। তিনি একটি শস্যদানাকে লক্ষ্য করেছিলেন কিন্তু তার তীরটি লক্ষ্যবস্তুতে আঘাত করেনি এবং এটি জঙ্গলে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা একটি ছেলেকে বিদ্ধ করে। ছেলেটি মুহূর্তেই মারা যায়। দুর্ভাগ্যবশত, ছেলেটি ছিল বিধবার একমাত্র ছেলে। বিধবা খুব হতবাক। তিনি কাজীর কাছে গিয়ে বিচার প্রার্থনা করেন। কাজী তখনকার একজন কঠোর বিচারক ছিলেন। তিনি শাসককে তার সামনে হাজির হওয়ার জন্য ডেকে পাঠালেন। কাজী ন্যায়বিচার নিশ্চিত করতে বদ্ধপরিকর ছিলেন। তবে গিয়াস উদ্দিন আজম শাহ কাজীর আদালতে হাজির হয়ে দোষ স্বীকার করেন। কাজী তাকে বিধবাকে সম্পূর্ণ ক্ষতিপূরণ দেওয়ার নির্দেশ দেন। রায় অনুযায়ী গিয়াস উদ্দিন জরিমানা পরিশোধ করেন। অতঃপর শাসক কাজীকে তার তরবারি দেখিয়ে বললেন, তুমি যদি আমার ভয়ে বিচারক হিসেবে তোমার দায়িত্ব পালনে ব্যর্থ হতে তাহলে আমি তোমাকে এই তরবারি দিয়ে শাস্তি দিতাম। তখন কাজী শাসককে তার বেত দেখিয়ে বললেন, "তুমি যদি আমার রায় অমান্য করো। আমি তোমাকে এই বেত দিয়ে শাস্তি দিতাম।" কাজীর এমন উত্তর শুনে শাসক খুবই খুশি হলেন। এরপর দুই মহাপুরুষ চির বন্ধু হয়ে ওঠেন।
