Miserable Lifestyle of Slum Dwellers
Swadheen Azad, Dhaka, 5 April: There are
many slums in Dhaka city. Many people live there. But the life the slum
dwellers lead is very lamentable. Usually the working class people like
rickshaw pullers, domestic workers, garment workers, helpers of various vehicles
and so on live there. They all have to face some common problems acutely. Atar
Ali, a rickshaw puller, says that their dwelling places are so dirty that they
always suffer from various skin disease and they also have to take unhygienic
food and drink polluted water. Rahima Begum, a garment worker, said that they
have to bathe in a creek near their shelter which is not only unhygienic but
also uncomfortable for the womenfolk.
Actually the slum dwellers have to pass
a miserable life in each and every step of their domestic life. Rabi, a 8 years
old boy who is a tokai, says that he along with his family has to sleep on the
dirty floor. He adds that their room is also too much congested with his
parents and his three siblings.
Talking to some other slum dwellers it
has been apparent that they live a very lamentable life in the slums. And due
to the unhygienic atmosphere, very often they have to suffer from different
fatal diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera, tuberculosis, jaundice,
typhoid and some other respiratory diseases. But as the dwellers are not
solvent enough, they have to accept this low standard life as their fate.
It is also seen that the slum dwellers
are responsible to a great extent for making their environment unhealthy by
urinating and leaving stool here and there.
